Dalrymple Vineyards, Pinot Noir Pipers River Tasmania 2022

(Carefully curated notes below are taken from the website)

Varietal Composition: Pinot Noir

Location: Pipers River Tasmania

Specialty Factor: Only 300 cases come to the US yearly

Cellar Aging: Drink now or cellar until 2037

A Few More Details

Home is where the heart is and home for us is at Pipers River. Here, the sloping terrain is caressed by the cooling sea breeze, giving fruit the chance to ripen at a leisurely pace over a long growing season. The result is waves of sour cherry flavours dusted with Asian five spice and subtle savoury undercurrent. Complex, elegant, subtle, delicious.

Tasting Notes

Initial aromas of ripe cherries, black tea and Asian five spice lift from the glass. Over time hints of seaspray, cinnamon and cranberries build into the opulent bouquet. The palate is classical and well defined. Fine, natural acidity and a layer of sweet summer fruit add balance and texture before a long finish with lingering notes of black cherry and cinnamon spice.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

Roasted duck with cherry sauce reduction served on a bed of winter vegetables and potato puree. Wholegrain lasagne with aubergine, heirloom tomatoes, courgettes and capsicums.

“Pinot Noir has always underpinned my enthusiasm for wine. It is the perfect example of what wine should be: mysterious, challenging, a complete reflection of its environment and the most satisfying when you get it right. Welcome to Dalrymple Vineyards.” –Peter Caldwell – Vigneron

Yalumba The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier 2020

(Carefully curated notes below are taken from the website)

Varietal Composition: Viognier

Location: Eden Valley, Australia

Specialty Factor: Only 80 cases come to the USA

Cellar Aging: Drink now or cellar until 2033

A Few More Details

The Virgilus is named after the Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, 70 – 90 BC. Considered one of the greatest Roman poets, Virgil was a mentor to the first Emperor of Rome, Augustus.

In 1980, with help from the Yalumba nursery, the first commercial Viognier vines in Australia were planted on our neighbour’s Eden Valley vineyard. Today, old vine Viognier grapes are carefully selected from this special site to craft The Virgilus. Handpicked Viognier grapes were whole-bunch pressed to mature French oak barrels, where they were fermented by ‘wild’ yeasts occurring naturally in the vineyard. These wild yeasts play a subtle yet important role in the development of the wine, creating layers of richness, complexity and fine textures.

Tasting Notes

Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral, sourdough-like texture, apricots and almond savouriness. The hallmark Viognier texture of the palate is clearly evident in this wine. It is complex while at the same time shows purity and restraint that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey

Food Pairing Suggestions:

This Viognier pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including pork belly, scallops with ginger, and spicy Asian cuisine. Its richness and spice complement both creamy and aromatic dishes.
