Tasting notes:
60% Hondarrabi Beltza/40% Hondarrabi Zuri from southeast facing slopes that provide protection from sea winds and maximum sun exposure.
Bright red berry character: think strawberry, raspberry, and hints of pomegranate. Subtle citrus zest — pink grapefruit, lemon — with a touch of ocean breeze salinity. Underlying herbaceous or mineral notes, similar to light green herbs and even a whisper of jalapeño. Dry, medium-bodied, and brightly acidic, with that signature tingle of natural effervescence
Food pairings!
- Seafood, shellfish, and oysters
- Fresh salads and tomato-based dishes
- Tapas, pintxos, and light grilled fish

Urkatx Txakoli is made exclusively for ¿Por qué no? Selections at the Zudugarai family winery where Mikel Errasti represents the 3rd generation at the helm. The family has direct control of all processes in the vineyard when selecting the grapes and in the winery that predates the DO itself. Mikel works the vineyards with the minimal amount of intervention needed and elaborates his txakoli through native yeast fermentation and natural carbonation.

For almost 1000 years, Arínzano has cultivated the mystery of Time and Nature. Located in an incomparable valley, magnified by its microclimates, stone, earth and water give rise to an exceptional terroir favourable to the singular expression of three very special varieties of wine. The estate has been successively owned by monks, lords and wine-producing families, with a constant link to wine. Today, in the center of this magnificent valley crossed by the Ega River and the Cierzo wind, Arínzano reveals wines that preserve the strength and grace of Time and Earth.

“Garciarévalo is situated at the confluence of the rivers Adaja and Eresma, which produces an exceptional microclimate characterized by temperatures up to five degrees cooler than other surrounding areas. This zone also offers a big climatic difference between the day and the nighttime temperatures, which is key for retaining acidity. Far from the arid conditions one expects in Castilla y León, their elevation at 900m and location within a pine forest, between two rivers, provides an ideal microclimate for producing beautiful, fresh, native verdejo grapes.
The soil here is extremely sandy and low in organic material, allowing for excellent drainage and a greater difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures due to sand’s quick release of heat at night. These factors allow their wines to be ripe yet incredibly fresh, with exceptional acidity for the warm Rueda region. It has also aided them in their conversion to completely organic viticulture, for which they were certified in the 2020 vintage.”

“Along the banks of the Cua river, a family-run cooperative of more than 250 individual holdings coalesced in the 1980s. While winemakers from Priorat flew in and brought fame and attention to the Bierzo region with their heavy-handed, oaky, and expensive Mencias, the women of Ribas del Cua continued making a simple, unadorned yet totally delicious Mencia without fanfare. A new generation of winemakers returned to Bierzo in the 2000s and climbed high into the hills to find vineyards for a fresher and more elegant sort of Mencia, all the while Ribas del Cua remained by the banks of the river, making this unctuous, yet elegant and complex wine with just a hint of oak.”

“Located in the historic town of Munébrega, Bodegas Breca was founded by Jorge Ordóñez in 2010. A trailblazer in the Spanish wine industry, Ordóñez established the estate to craft the finest Garnacha in Aragón, with a focus on the unique qualities of the region’s ancient vines. Bodegas Breca’s specialty is the Garnacha de Aragón, the grape’s original and genetically purest clone, which can be traced back to the medieval Kingdom of Aragón. This clone, historically spread across the Mediterranean by the Aragonese, is now preserved in its birthplace—Calatayud, offering a unique and authentic wine experience. Jorge Ordóñez’s philosophy revolves around showcasing the unique character of old- vine Garnacha. His goal was to preserve Spain’s indigenous grape varieties and their historical significance, advocating for traditional, low-intervention winemaking techniques. Bodegas Breca’s vineyards are in the rugged, high-altitude terrains of the Sierra de Pardos and Sierra de Peña Blanca. These vineyards, planted between 1900 and 1975, are head-trained and dry-farmed, allowing the vines to naturally adapt to the local climate and soil conditions. The high altitudes, reaching 3,500 feet, play a crucial role in the winemaking process, producing extreme diurnal temperature shifts—sometimes up to 60°F. These conditions help the grapes retain acidity and develop complex flavors, contributing to the unique taste of Bodegas Breca’s wines.”
