Grower Champagne Club – October 2010

NV P. Lancelot-Royer, Blanc de Blancs “Cuvée des Chevaliers” Grand Cru
The small family estate of Domaine Lancelot-Royer is located in the tiny Champagne village of Cramant, in the heart of the Côtes des Blancs. Cramant (not to be confused with the French term crémant, which refers to sparkling wines made outside the Champagne region) is surrounded by 100% grand cru vineyards. The chalky soil here is perfect for growing Chardonnay grapes. Their non-vintage “Cuvée des Chevaliers” is, of course, 100% Chardonnay, and it has longer lees aging (usually around three and a half years), giving this Champagne its amazing complexity, texture and depth. We took one sip and knew it was headed for the club, with its nose of fresh-baked brioche and warm, toasty finish. It is $60 and is perfect for either quiet contemplation or your next celebration.
